Ricky Rubio
He was named to the 2012 NBA All Rookie First Team
Rubio's NBA journey began when he was selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, making him the first player born in the 1990s to be drafted by an NBA team. However, due to contractual obligations with his Spanish team, Rubio delayed his move to the NBA until 2011. Once he joined the Timberwolves, he quickly became known for his exceptional court vision, passing ability, and defensive prowess. Rubio spent six seasons in Minnesota before being traded to the Utah Jazz in 2017, where he continued to be a key playmaker.
In 2019, Rubio signed with the Phoenix Suns, where he played a pivotal role in the team's development before returning to the Timberwolves in 2020. His career took another turn when he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2021. Unfortunately, Rubio's season was cut short due to an ACL injury in December of that year. After a brief stint with the Indiana Pacers, Rubio's future in the NBA became uncertain as he announced in August 2023 that he would be taking a break from basketball to focus on his mental health, a decision that was widely respected in the sports community.
On 4 January 2024, Rubio officially announced his retirement from the NBA, marking the end of a remarkable career that spanned both European and American basketball. Known for his leadership on and off the court, Rubio's legacy extends beyond his statistics, as he has been a role model for young athletes worldwide. His decision to prioritize mental health has also sparked important conversations in the sports world about the well-being of professional athletes.
