Dempsey's time at Fulham was particularly notable, as he became the club's all-time leading Premier League goal scorer with 50 goals. He was instrumental in Fulham's run to the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League final and was named the club's Player of the Season for two consecutive years (2010–11 and 2011–12). In 2012, Dempsey made history by becoming the first American player to score a hat-trick in the Premier League. His performances earned him a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, where he continued to excel, scoring 12 goals in one season and setting a record for the most goals by an American in a top-tier European league.
After his stint in the Premier League, Dempsey returned to MLS in 2013, signing with the Seattle Sounders. He played 115 matches for the Sounders, scoring 47 goals and helping the team win the 2014 Supporters' Shield. Despite being sidelined during the Sounders' 2016 MLS Cup-winning campaign due to an irregular heartbeat, Dempsey returned to the field the following season. He announced his retirement from professional soccer in 2018, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most accomplished American players in both domestic and international competitions.
On the international stage, Dempsey earned over 140 caps for the United States national team and scored 57 goals, tying with Landon Donovan as the nation's all-time leading scorer. He represented the U.S. in three World Cups, scoring in each tournament, and played a pivotal role in the team's success in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, winning the tournament three times. Dempsey also helped the U.S. reach the final of the 2009 Confederations Cup, further solidifying his status as a key figure in American soccer history. In 2022, he was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to his remarkable career.
