Roger Clemens

He won 6 AL Cy Young Awards; He won a NCAA Championship at Texas, He won 2 World Championships with the New York Yankees

William Roger Clemens, widely known as "Rocket," is one of the most iconic pitchers in Major League Baseball (MLB) history. Over his 24-season career, Clemens played for several teams, including the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros. His remarkable achievements include 354 career wins, a 3.12 earned run average (ERA), and 4,672 strikeouts, placing him third on the all-time strikeout list. Clemens' fierce competitive nature and powerful fastball made him a dominant force on the mound, earning him a reputation as one of the most intimidating pitchers of his era.

Clemens' career was filled with accolades, including an unprecedented seven Cy Young Awards, more than any other pitcher in MLB history. He was an 11-time MLB All-Star and a two-time World Series champion with the New York Yankees. Clemens made his MLB debut in 1984 with the Boston Red Sox, where he spent 12 seasons and won his first Cy Young Award in 1986. That same year, he also earned the American League (AL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award and set a record by striking out 20 batters in a single game. His dominance continued with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he won two more Cy Young Awards and achieved the pitching triple crown in both seasons.

In 1999, Clemens was traded to the New York Yankees, where he added two World Series titles to his resume. His 2001 season was particularly historic, as he became the first pitcher in MLB history to start a season with a 20–1 win-loss record. Clemens reached two major milestones in 2003, recording his 300th career win and 4,000th strikeout in the same game. After a successful stint with the Houston Astros, where he won his seventh Cy Young Award, Clemens returned to the Yankees in 2007 for one final season before retiring. He remains the only pitcher in MLB history to achieve more than 350 wins and 4,500 strikeouts.

Despite his on-field success, Clemens' career was marred by allegations of steroid use, which surfaced in the Mitchell Report. His former trainer, Brian McNamee, testified that Clemens had used anabolic steroids during the latter part of his career. Clemens vehemently denied these accusations under oath before Congress, leading to a federal investigation. In 2010, Clemens was indicted on six felony counts, including perjury and making false statements to Congress. However, after a mistrial and a lengthy legal battle, Clemens was acquitted of all charges in 2012. These controversies impacted his Hall of Fame candidacy, as he never received the required 75% of votes during his ten years of eligibility, peaking at 65.2% in 2022.
