Landon Donovan
He is one of the best U.S. soccer players ever
Donovan's professional career began when he signed with Bayer Leverkusen in 1999, but it was his time in Major League Soccer that truly defined his legacy. After spending several years on loan with the San Jose Earthquakes, Donovan permanently returned to the U.S. in 2005 to join the LA Galaxy. During his time with the Galaxy, Donovan won a record six MLS Cups and became the league's all-time leader in assists, with 136. His brief stints with Bayern Munich and Everton in Europe further showcased his talent on the international stage. Donovan retired in 2014 but made a brief comeback with the Galaxy in 2016 and later played for León in 2018.
On the international stage, Donovan made his debut for the U.S. Men's National Team in 2000 and quickly became a cornerstone of the squad. He is the only American player to reach the 50 goals/50 assists milestone and is the second-most-capped player in U.S. history. Donovan's performances in the 2002 and 2010 FIFA World Cups were particularly memorable, with his three goals in 2010 making him the highest-scoring male American player in World Cup history. He also won the Best Young Player Award at the 2002 World Cup and remains the only seven-time winner of the U.S. Soccer Player of the Year award.
In recognition of his contributions to the sport, the Major League Soccer MVP Award was renamed the Landon Donovan MVP Award in his honor. After retiring as a player, Donovan transitioned into coaching and is currently the interim head coach of San Diego Wave FC in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). His impact on American soccer, both as a player and now as a coach, continues to inspire future generations of athletes.
