Greg LeMond

He is a three time winner of the Tour de France; He was the 1989 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year

Gregory James LeMond, born on June 26, 1961, is widely regarded as one of the greatest American road racing cyclists in history. He made his mark on the global stage by winning the prestigious Tour de France three times, in 1986, 1989, and 1990, becoming the first non-European to achieve this feat. LeMond's victories in the Tour de France were complemented by his two Road Race World Championship titles, making him the only American male to win both. His success in the sport not only broke barriers for American cyclists but also solidified his place among the elite in professional cycling.

LeMond's career was not without its challenges. In 1987, he suffered a life-threatening accident when he was accidentally shot while hunting. The incident left him with severe injuries, requiring two surgeries and forcing him to miss the next two editions of the Tour de France. Despite the setback, LeMond made a remarkable comeback in 1989, winning the Tour in one of the most dramatic finishes in the race's history. He went on to defend his title in 1990, joining an exclusive group of cyclists who have won the Tour de France three or more times.

Beyond his achievements on the bike, LeMond was a pioneer in advancing cycling technology. He was one of the first professional cyclists to adopt aerodynamic "triathlon" handlebars and carbon fiber frames, innovations that have since become standard in the sport. LeMond's influence extended beyond racing, as he later founded LeMond Bicycles, a company that marketed these cutting-edge technologies. His business ventures also included interests in real estate, restaurants, and fitness equipment, further showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.

LeMond has also been a vocal advocate for clean sport, speaking out against the use of performance-enhancing drugs in cycling. His stance on doping has made him a respected figure in the fight for integrity in the sport. In addition to his advocacy work, LeMond is a founding board member of 1in6.org, a nonprofit organization that supports male survivors of child sexual abuse. His contributions to both cycling and society have earned him a lasting legacy, and he was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame in 1996.
