Colin Kaepernick
He was the starting quarterback of the 2012 NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers; He was twice named WAC Offensive Player of the Year (2008, 2010)
Kaepernick's football career began at the University of Nevada, where he played for the Nevada Wolf Pack. He was a standout player, earning the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Offensive Player of the Year award twice. Kaepernick also made history by becoming the only player in NCAA Division I to accumulate over 10,000 passing yards and 4,000 rushing yards in a career. His impressive college performance led to his selection by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, where he initially served as a backup quarterback before taking over as the starter in 2012.
In his first season as the 49ers' starting quarterback, Kaepernick led the team to Super Bowl XLVII, their first appearance in the championship game since 1994. Although the 49ers lost to the Baltimore Ravens, Kaepernick's performance solidified his reputation as a dynamic dual-threat quarterback. He continued to lead the team to success in the 2013 season, reaching the NFC Championship Game. However, the following seasons saw a decline in the 49ers' performance, and Kaepernick's role as the starting quarterback fluctuated.
Kaepernick's decision to kneel during the national anthem in 2016 led to widespread controversy and ultimately affected his NFL career. After becoming a free agent at the end of the 2016 season, he remained unsigned, with many analysts attributing his absence from the league to political reasons rather than his on-field abilities. In 2017, Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL, accusing team owners of colluding to keep him out of the league. The case was settled in 2019, but Kaepernick has yet to return to professional football. His protests gained renewed attention in 2020 during the George Floyd protests, further cementing his legacy as a prominent figure in the fight for social justice.
