Andy Pettitte
He helped the Yankees win five World Series titles
Pettitte was drafted by the Yankees in 1990 and made his MLB debut in 1995. He quickly established himself as one of the top pitchers in the American League, finishing third in the AL Rookie of the Year voting and leading the league with 21 wins in 1996. That same year, he was the runner-up for the AL Cy Young Award. Pettitte's ability to consistently win games made him a reliable starter for the Yankees, and he was instrumental in their four World Series titles between 1996 and 2000. In 2001, he was named the AL Championship Series MVP, further solidifying his reputation as a clutch performer.
After spending nine seasons with the Yankees, Pettitte signed with the Houston Astros in 2004, where he continued to be a dominant force on the mound. He returned to the Yankees in 2007 and helped the team win another World Series in 2009. Pettitte's second stint with the Yankees lasted six seasons, during which he admitted to using human growth hormone (HGH) in 2002 to recover from an elbow injury. Despite this controversy, Pettitte's legacy as one of the greatest pitchers in Yankees history remains intact. He retired after the 2013 season, leaving behind a remarkable career.
Pettitte's pitching arsenal included a four-seam fastball, cut fastball, slider, curveball, and changeup. His exceptional pickoff move to first base allowed him to record 98 career pickoffs, a testament to his defensive skills. Among Yankees pitchers, Pettitte ranks first in strikeouts (2,020), third in wins (219), and tied for first in games started (438). His contributions to the Yankees were honored in 2015 when the team retired his uniform number 46 and dedicated a plaque to him in Monument Park. Pettitte's legacy as one of the most successful pitchers of his era is firmly established.
