He guided the team to three NFC Championship games (2006, 2009, and 2018), secured seven division titles, and earned nine playoff berths. In 2012, he was suspended for the entire NFL season due to his involvement in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal, where players were allegedly paid bonuses for injuring opponents. Payton initially denied knowledge of the scheme but later admitted to having read an email outlining the plan. Despite the setback, Payton returned to coaching in 2013 and continued to build on his legacy with the Saints before stepping down in 2021. His return to the NFL as the head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2023 marks a new chapter in his storied career.
