Randy Johnson

He was a 10 time All Star and won 5 Cy Young awards

Randall David Johnson, widely known as "The Big Unit," is one of the most iconic pitchers in Major League Baseball (MLB) history. Standing at an imposing 6 feet 10 inches, Johnson's height and fierce demeanor on the mound made him a formidable presence throughout his 22-season career. He played for six teams, most notably the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks, where he became a cornerstone of their pitching rotations. His fastball-slider combination was legendary, and despite early struggles with control, Johnson developed into one of the most dominant pitchers of his generation, consistently leading the league in strikeouts and other key pitching metrics.

Johnson's career is filled with remarkable achievements, including his role in leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to their first World Series title in 2001. Alongside Curt Schilling, Johnson was named co-Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the series, winning three games against the New York Yankees. His performance in the 2001 World Series remains one of the most memorable in baseball history, as he helped secure the championship in just the Diamondbacks' fourth season of existence. Johnson also won the prestigious pitching Triple Crown in 2002, further solidifying his place among the game's elite.

Over the course of his career, Johnson amassed 303 wins, the fifth-most by a left-handed pitcher in MLB history, and his 4,875 strikeouts rank second all-time, behind only Nolan Ryan. He is tied with Ryan for the most 300-strikeout seasons, achieving the feat six times. Johnson's dominance earned him five Cy Young Awards, including four consecutive wins from 1999 to 2002, making him one of only two pitchers to accomplish that feat. He also became one of the few pitchers to throw no-hitters in both the American and National Leagues, a testament to his versatility and skill.

Even as he aged, Johnson's effectiveness on the mound did not wane. In 2004, at the age of 40, he threw a perfect game, becoming the oldest pitcher in MLB history to do so. His longevity and sustained excellence were rare for a pitcher, with many of his best seasons coming after the age of 35. Johnson retired in 2009 at the age of 46 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015, his first year of eligibility. He remains a revered figure in the sport, particularly for his contributions to the Diamondbacks, where he is immortalized in the Hall of Fame with a Diamondbacks cap on his plaque.
