Steve Yzerman
He led the Detroit Red Wings to three Stanley Cup titles; He is one of the best players to ever play professional hockey
Yzerman's individual accolades are as impressive as his team achievements. He was awarded the Lester B. Pearson Award as the NHL's most outstanding player in the 1988–89 season, and in 1998, he earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Known for his two-way play, Yzerman also won the Selke Trophy in 2000 as the league's best defensive forward. His perseverance and dedication to the game were recognized with the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 2003. Over the course of his career, Yzerman played in ten All-Star Games and was named to the NHL's First All-Star Team in 2000.
After retiring from professional hockey in 2006, Yzerman transitioned into a successful executive career. He initially served as vice president of the Red Wings, helping the team win another Stanley Cup in 2008. In 2010, Yzerman took on the role of general manager for the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he built a competitive team that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2015. In 2019, Yzerman returned to the Red Wings as general manager, where he continues to shape the future of the franchise. His impact on the game extends beyond the NHL, as he also served as executive director for Team Canada, leading them to gold medals in the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics.
Yzerman's legacy is further cemented by his numerous Hall of Fame inductions. He was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009, alongside former teammates Brett Hull and Luc Robitaille. In 2014, Yzerman was also inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to international hockey. His #19 jersey was retired by the Red Wings in 2007, and in 2017, he was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players" in history. Yzerman's influence on the game, both as a player and an executive, is undeniable, and his contributions to the sport will be remembered for generations.
