Ed Reed

He helped lead the Ravens to victory in Super Bowl XLVII; He was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2004

Edward Earl Reed Jr. is widely regarded as one of the greatest safeties in NFL history, known for his exceptional football intelligence and playmaking ability. Born on September 11, 1978, Reed played college football for the Miami Hurricanes, where he was a key member of the 2001 national championship team. His standout performances earned him unanimous All-American honors, setting the stage for a remarkable professional career. Reed was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft, where he would go on to become a cornerstone of their defense for over a decade.

Reed's NFL career is filled with accolades and records that solidify his place among the elite. He was selected to nine Pro Bowls and was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2004. Reed's ability to read opposing offenses and make game-changing plays was unmatched, as evidenced by his NFL records for the longest interception returns (106 yards in 2004 and 107 yards in 2008) and the most interception return yards (1,590). His 64 career interceptions rank him among the top safeties in NFL history, and his nine postseason interceptions are tied for the most in league history.

One of Reed's crowning achievements came in 2013 when he helped lead the Baltimore Ravens to victory in Super Bowl XLVII. Known for his meticulous preparation and film study, Reed was often referred to as a "ball hawk" for his ability to anticipate and disrupt opposing quarterbacks. His leadership and on-field performance earned him a reputation as one of the most feared defenders in the league. Reed's contributions to the game were recognized in 2019 when he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the all-time greats.

After retiring from professional football, Reed transitioned into coaching and advisory roles. In 2016, he served as an assistant defensive backs coach for the Buffalo Bills, and in 2020, he returned to his alma mater, the University of Miami, as the football team's chief of staff. In this role, Reed provides guidance and support to the coaching staff, helping to shape the next generation of football talent. His post-playing career continues to reflect his deep knowledge of the game and his commitment to excellence.
