Doug Flutie

He won the 1984 Heisman Trophy; He is well known for his career at Boston College and his Hail Mary touchdown pass

Douglas Richard Flutie, born on October 23, 1962, is a former professional football quarterback who enjoyed a remarkable 21-season career across multiple leagues. Flutie is best known for his versatility and success in both the National Football League (NFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL). His football journey began at Boston College, where he won the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1984, largely due to his iconic game-winning "Hail Mary" pass against the Miami Hurricanes. This moment remains one of the most memorable in college football history and solidified Flutie's reputation as a clutch performer.

Flutie initially chose to play in the United States Football League (USFL) with the New Jersey Generals, which delayed his entry into the NFL. As a result, he was drafted 285th overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1985 NFL Draft, making him the lowest-drafted Heisman Trophy winner. After the USFL folded, Flutie spent time with the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots, but his early NFL career was marked by inconsistency. In 1990, he made the bold decision to move to the CFL, where he would go on to become one of the league's all-time greats.

During his eight seasons in the CFL, Flutie played for the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, and Toronto Argonauts, earning six Most Outstanding Player awards and winning three Grey Cup championships. In each of those Grey Cup victories, Flutie was named the game's MVP, further cementing his legacy in Canadian football. His success in the CFL was unparalleled, and he is widely regarded as one of the best players in the league's history. His impact on the game in Canada was so significant that he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

Flutie returned to the NFL in 1998 with the Buffalo Bills, where he experienced a career resurgence. He led the Bills to the playoffs and earned Pro Bowl honors, as well as the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. Despite his success, he was controversially benched during the playoffs, a decision that remains debated among fans and analysts. Flutie later played for the San Diego Chargers and finished his career as a backup for the New England Patriots. His contributions to football were recognized with his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007 and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2007, making him the first non-Canadian inductee.
