Derrick Rose
He led the Memphis Tigers to the 2007-08 Final Four; He was the #1 pick in the NBA draft in 2008 by the Chicago Bulls
Rose's college career at the University of Memphis was equally impressive. Under the guidance of coach John Calipari, Rose led the Tigers to a 38-2 record, the most wins in NCAA history at the time, and an appearance in the 2008 NCAA Championship game. However, his college legacy was marred by an NCAA investigation that invalidated his SAT scores, leading to the vacating of Memphis' entire 2007-08 season. Despite this setback, Rose's talent was undeniable, and he entered the NBA with high expectations, which he quickly met during his time with the Bulls.
Unfortunately, Rose's career was plagued by injuries, particularly to his knees. In the 2012 NBA playoffs, he tore his ACL, which sidelined him for the entire 2012-13 season. He returned in 2013-14 but suffered another knee injury, this time to his right meniscus, which caused him to miss the remainder of that season. Despite multiple comebacks, Rose's career was consistently interrupted by injuries, limiting his ability to return to his MVP form. Nevertheless, he continued to fight through adversity and remained a valuable player in the league.
After his time with the Bulls, Rose played for several teams, including the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Detroit Pistons. He experienced a career resurgence with the Timberwolves, where he embraced a role as a sixth man off the bench. In 2023, Rose signed with the Memphis Grizzlies, but by September 2024, he announced his retirement from professional basketball. Rose's perseverance and determination throughout his injury-riddled career have left a lasting legacy in the NBA.
