Vince McMahon
He is the Chairman of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Board of Directors; He is also the majority shareholder of WWE; He was nominated for Sports Illustrated 'Sportsman of the Year' in 2006
McMahon's journey in professional wrestling began in the 1970s when he worked as a commentator for WWE, then known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). In 1982, he purchased the company from his father, Vincent J. McMahon, and set out to consolidate the fragmented wrestling industry. His bold moves, including the creation of WrestleMania in 1985, helped WWE become a household name. WrestleMania, now an annual event, is one of the most successful and widely watched professional wrestling events in the world. McMahon's aggressive business strategies also led to the acquisition of rival promotions, including World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 2001 and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) in 2003.
In addition to his behind-the-scenes role, McMahon became a prominent on-screen character in WWE. Starting as a commentator, he later adopted the persona of "Mr. McMahon," a villainous, power-hungry character who became a central figure in WWE storylines. His character's catchphrase, "You're fired!" became iconic, and McMahon even competed in wrestling matches, winning the WWE Championship and the ECW Championship. His on-screen presence helped drive WWE's popularity during the "Attitude Era" of the late 1990s and early 2000s, a period marked by edgier content and intense rivalries.
McMahon's career has not been without controversy. In June 2022, he stepped down as CEO and chairman of WWE amid allegations of hush-money payments related to affairs with former employees. His daughter, Stephanie McMahon, took over as interim CEO. Although McMahon announced his retirement in July 2022, he returned as executive chairman in January 2023. In April 2023, WWE merged with Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, to form TKO Group Holdings, with McMahon serving as executive chairman. However, in January 2024, McMahon resigned from TKO following allegations of sex trafficking and sexual assault, and he is currently under federal investigation.
