Patrick Brian Burrell, known as "Pat the Bat," is a former professional baseball outfielder and current hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants in Major League Baseball (MLB). Burrell had a successful playing career, spending time with the Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, and San Francisco Giants. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 235 pounds, Burrell was a powerful right-handed hitter and thrower. Burrell's journey to the major leagues began at the University of Miami, where he won the prestigious Golden Spikes Award in 1998, recognizing him as the best amateur baseball player in the country. That same year, he was selected as the first overall pick in the MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. After a brief stint in the minor leagues, Burrell made his MLB debut in 2000 and quickly established himself as a power hitter. In 2001, he hit 27 home runs, the first of eight consecutive seasons in which he would hit at least 20 home runs. His career-high came in 2002 when he blasted 37 home runs and finished 14th in National League MVP voting.

Burrell's time with the Phillies was marked by both highs and lows. In 2003, he signed a six-year contract but struggled with a career-low batting average of .209. However, he rebounded in subsequent seasons, hitting 32 home runs in 2005 and driving in a career-high 117 runs. His consistent power at the plate helped the Phillies reach the playoffs in 2007, and in 2008, Burrell played a key role in the team's World Series victory, hitting 33 home runs during the regular season. After the 2008 season, Burrell became a free agent and signed with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he served as the team's designated hitter.

Burrell's time with the Rays was less successful, and after a disappointing 2009 season, he was designated for assignment in 2010. He then signed with the San Francisco Giants, where he found new life as the team's left fielder. Burrell hit 18 home runs in 96 games for the Giants, helping them reach the playoffs and ultimately win the 2010 World Series. After battling a foot injury in 2011, Burrell retired from professional baseball in 2012, signing a one-day contract with the Phillies to officially end his career with the team. He has since transitioned into a coaching role with the Giants, where he continues to contribute to the game.
