James Arthur Boeheim Jr., born on November 17, 1944, is a legendary figure in college basketball, having spent nearly five decades as the head coach of the Syracuse Orange men's basketball team. Boeheim's tenure at Syracuse, which began in 1976 and concluded in 2023, is marked by an extraordinary level of success. Under his leadership, the Orange secured ten Big East Conference regular season championships and five Big East tournament titles. His teams made 34 NCAA tournament appearances, including five Final Four appearances, and reached the national championship game three times, winning the title in 2003 with the help of future NBA star Carmelo Anthony.

Boeheim's influence extended beyond Syracuse, as he played a significant role in shaping the broader landscape of basketball. He served as the President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and held leadership positions on various USA Basketball committees. His expertise was also sought after on the international stage, where he served as an assistant coach for the United States men's national basketball team during three Summer Olympics (2008, 2012, and 2016) and multiple FIBA World Championships. His contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005.

Despite announcing his intention to retire in 2018, Boeheim remained at Syracuse until 2023 due to the departure of his expected successor, Mike Hopkins. During the 2021–22 season, Boeheim had the unique opportunity to coach both of his sons, Jimmy and Buddy Boeheim, adding a personal dimension to his storied career. In 2022, following the retirement of Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, Boeheim became the winningest active coach in Division I basketball. After surviving cancer in 2001, he and his wife, Juli, founded the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation, which focuses on child welfare, cancer treatment, and prevention.
