Born on November 21, 1955, Maxwell rose to prominence during his college years at UNC Charlotte, where he led the 49ers to an NCAA Final Four appearance in 1977. His contributions to the game were recognized when the Boston Celtics retired his jersey number 31 in 2003, a testament to his lasting legacy with the franchise.

Following his retirement from playing, Maxwell transitioned into broadcasting, where he has served as the color commentator for Celtics radio broadcasts since 2001. His deep knowledge of the game and engaging personality have made him a beloved figure in the Celtics community. Maxwell also briefly coached in the United States Basketball League, further showcasing his passion for the sport.
